Lay Ministries

From the Book of Common Prayer (p.855)

“The ministry of lay persons is to represent Christ and his Church; to bear witness to him wherever they may be; and, according to the gifts given them, to carry on Christ’s work of reconciliation in the world; and to take their place in the life, worship, and governance of the Church.”

Lay Ministers are envisioned to play key roles in serving the vision and mission of St. John’s Episcopal Church in Flushing, New York.

Below are the current Lay Ministries where one may contribute time, talents or treasures in the celebration of the Eucharist and/or help draw ourselves, our families and community nearer to the Risen Lord – The Way, The Truth, and the Life.

Acolytes

Acolytes are people (ages 5 through adult) who are interested in being an important part of the worship service. Their main duties include acting as Cross-bearers and Torch-bearers, helping with the Procession, assisting the priest in celebrating the Eucharist and helping the Recessional. Lectors

The Lectors lead worship through the reading of the scriptures. If you are interested in serving as a Lector please contact our liturgy committee.

Eucharistic Ministers

Eucharistic Ministers assist the Priest in serving the Bread and Wine at Communion. If you are interested in serving as a Eucharistic Minister please contact Rev. Willis Lingayo.

Ushers

Ushers serve every Sunday morning as well as at weddings, funerals, memorial services and special feast days throughout the year. Ushers are the first evangelists – the first smile that greets regular parishioners and visitors as they come to church. Their ministry is important because the sense of Christ’s hospitality they extend to all who enter the Church sets the tone for a meaningful worship experience.
